A 57-year-old farmer and his 24-year-old son appeared at the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on charges of malicious damage to property and cruelty to animals yesterday. Their arrest followed after they killed 42 goats, belonging to another local man, that were reportedly grazing on their farm.
It is reported that the suspects spotted the herd grazing on their farm and allegedly shot three of the goats before deciding to use their two bakkies to run over the rest of the herd, ruthlessly killing them.
The Public Prosecutor has informed our Farm Animal Protection Unit that an out of court settlement has been reached. We are outraged that these animals did not get the deserved justice. We will not leave this and will lay charges of animal cruelty ourselves.
All animals are sentient beings who deserve to be treated as such.
