18 July 2018 marks what would have been Nelson Mandela’s 100th Birthday.  On this auspicious day, the NSPCA commemorates our beloved Madiba who honoured the NSPCA as Patron-in-Chief from 1994 until his sad passing in 2013.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela accepted the invitation to become our Patron-in-Chief in 1994.  We recall receiving the news from the Union Buildings on 8 December of that year and we recognised the significance of this support which was truly cherished over the years.

The NSPCA and the SPCA movement throughout South Africa proudly commemorate our association with this great man and express our feelings of appreciation and heartfelt recognition of Nelson Mandela’s life of selfless service and dedication to our country.

On Mandela Day, which is a global call to action day, the NSPCA celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world.

“And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.” – Nelson Mandela, Long Walk to Freedom

We call on South Africans to join us in spreading Madiba’s light in making an impact in the lives of others through simple acts of kindness and a generosity of spirit to make our world a better place.

“We celebrate 100 years of light, the light that our Nation’s Father, Tata Madiba was courageous enough to share with the entire world. We want to honour that by lighting up the world. Not only in memory of our Madiba, but to continue his legacy with courage and perseverance. To make this world a better place” said Meg Wilson, NSPCA Public Relations Officer.

We hope that you will join us in honouring Nelson Mandela by changing the world.
