A routine inspection of a registered equine abattoir in the North West by our Farm Animal Protection Unit uncovered severe abuse and inhumane treatment of donkeys at the facility.
The donkeys were forced to endure horrific conditions. They witnessed other animals being stunned before slaughter and were left for extended periods in neglected and overcrowded pens. Our Inspectors witnessed workers striking donkeys and using electric prodders to force them to move. Water troughs were rusted and filthy, and a lack of sufficient staff at the facility led to dangerous shortcuts being taken when handling the donkeys.
Large stockpiles of donkey hides were found, destined for export to China. However, staff at the Chinese-owned abattoir were unable to provide information about what happened to the remaining donkey meat after the hides were processed.
Disturbed by the conditions they observed, our Inspectors raised their concerns with the owners and formally notified the North West Provincial Veterinary Department of their findings. However, upon returning for a follow-up inspection, they were shocked to find conditions much the same. They also discovered an automated winch being used to forcibly drag unwilling donkeys into a stun box. This was creating further suffering and distress for the already traumatised animals. A formal warning was issued, and the dangerous equipment removed.
Unfortunately, like cattle, chickens, and pigs, the slaughter of donkeys is not illegal. This means facilities like this cannot be shut down as long as they operate within the law. Our Inspectors will continue to monitor the abattoir to ensure it complies with animal welfare standards. We are dedicated to ensuring that all animals receive the dignity and compassion they deserve, especially at the time of their deaths.
