What began with a tip-off became one of South Africa’s largest-ever animal welfare disasters: more than a million chickens abandoned to starve on multiple farms owned by Daybreak Foods — a state-funded company that simply walked away.
No food. No water. No plan for humane euthanasia. Just silence and suffering on an unimaginable scale.
The NSPCA responded, not to save lives, but to end the agony. The operation continues today, with inspections and legal battles still underway. This artwork honours those who were lost and those still fighting.
Both haunting and hopeful, The Daybreak Chicken shines a light on the hidden cost of industrial farming and the courage it takes to confront it.
