“The Sani Donkeys” honours a landmark NSPCA victory in the ongoing battle against the illegal donkey skin trade. In 2017, dozens of donkeys were rescued from cruelty so severe it shook the nation. Their suffering was the result of a brutal underground industry that harvests donkey hides for traditional medicine — a trade steeped in exploitation and neglect.
But this story has a rare and beautiful ending.
Thanks to the relentless work of NSPCA Inspectors, five donkeys were rehomed to a serene sanctuary in Bethlehem, Free State — with fourteen more joining them soon after. There, they now roam safely, free from pain and fear.
With her signature warmth and empathy, watercolour artist Mareli van Zyl captures this turning point in delicate brushstrokes — the quiet grace of the donkeys, the softness of the Free State fields, and the hard-won peace they now enjoy.
Proceeds support the NSPCA’s Donkey Upliftment Project— helping us to protect donkeys across South Africa.
