The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has been successful in the arrest of a suspect linked to the horrific killing of a young zebra in Limpopo earlier this month.

Horrifying footage circulating on social media shows two individuals using an axe to brutally hack at the head of the zebra, who was trapped in a piece of wire fencing.

The suspect was arrested on 20 February 2025 and appeared in the Giyani Magistrates’ Court on 24 February 2025, after being released on bail of R1,000.

“The first suspect faces charges relating to several contraventions of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962,” says Chief Inspector Douglas Wolhuter, Manager of the NSPCA’s Wildlife Protection Unit.  “There is a second suspect in this case, who we believe is working in another province. He too will be charged in terms of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962, and brought before Court as soon as he is located”.

We are thrilled with this development, as it reaffirms that the wheels of justice turn against perpetrators of animal cruelty who cause suffering to any animal.  The NSPCA will not tolerate cruelty and will not turn a blind eye to anyone who contravenes the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.
