The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA), and Woodrock Animal Rescue are offering a joint reward of R5000 for information which leads to a successful prosecution, following the discovery of a critically injured female black and white Pitbull-type dog found outside Woodrock Animal Rescue in the Hennops River Valley, in Pretoria Rural, early this morning.
The dog was found in an extremely poor condition and had sustained severe injuries consistent with prolonged suffering. Despite immediate assessment by Woodrock’s team, her condition was beyond recovery, and the difficult decision was taken to humanely end her suffering.
The NSPCA is investigating the matter as a case of suspected dog fighting, as well as abandonment and failure to render or procure veterinary assistance, all of which constitute criminal offences under the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.
“This was not an accident, and it was not unavoidable,” said Senior Inspector Arno de Klerk, Manager of the NSPCA’s Special Projects Unit. “This dog was failed repeatedly – through violence, neglect, and abandonment. We are committed to identifying those responsible and ensuring that they are held fully accountable.”
Members of the public who may have information related to this case, suspected dog fighting activity, or the identity of those involved are urged to come forward.
All information will be treated as confidential.

Dog fighting is organised, deliberate cruelty. It relies on secrecy and silence. The NSPCA and Woodrock Animal Rescue call on communities to report suspicious activity and help ensure that those responsible for this crime are brought to justice.
Investigations like this require specialised inspectors, long hours in the field, and the resources to see cases through to court. If you would like to support the NSPCA’s work to fight dog fighting, please consider leaving a gift below:
