In June 2016, the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) laid charges against Mr Labuschagne, the manager of Harcos Farm in Odendaalsrus in the Freestate after the discovery of seriously injured chickens that had broken legs and were left to suffer.
Mr Labuschagne admitted guilt at the Odendaalsrus Magistrates Court in September 2017 and was subjected to a laughable fine of R1 000 but now has a criminal record.
This is not the first time that the NSPCA has had to intervene at outlets where live chickens are sold in horrendous conditions and left to suffer.
We urge the public to exert your power as consumers and stop supporting this often inhumane trade. Be aware of what you buy, where you buy it from and what you choose to eat. Rather support humane options. We also urge the public to report any cases of animal cruelty and neglect.
Public action, consumer buying patterns, public awareness and a willingness to report issues is what is going to change this trade and help the chickens that find themselves in these terrible conditions. Contact the NSPCA on 011-907-3590 or nspca@nspca.co.za to report any concerns.
The NSPCA will continue to inspect these facilities and intervene when necessary to ensure that the suffering ends.
