The NSPCA was alerted to an incident where a masked man was pictured swinging a cat before throwing it into a fire during ongoing protest action in Zwelihle, Hermanus in the Western Cape in July 2018.
The NSPCA immediately investigated the case and attempted to establish the identity of the masked man that had been photographed committing the cruelty. The man has recently been identified and charges have been laid against him in terms of the Animals Protection Act No 71 of 1962.
“We are horrified at the actions of this man against a creature that had absolutely nothing to do with the protest. An act of such malice and brutality against an innocent and defenceless animal is disgusting,” said National Senior Inspector Vonny Strachan of the NSPCA.
The NSPCA will pursue this case and ensure that justice triumphs for this cat and all animals that are caught in the collateral damage of societal unrest.
