The NSPCA Special Projects Unit recently conducted a crucial inspection at the recent SABBS (South African Boerboel Breeders Society) Show and Appraisal. The Special Projects Unit, along with Vereeniging & Vanderbijlpark SPCA and Sedibeng K9 Unit, executed the inspection under warrant.
Their primary objective? Identifying and addressing possible violations of the Animals Protection Act, particularly concerning the unlawful maiming of tails in Boerboel-type dogs.
It’s important to remember: these procedures are unnecessary and cause pain and suffering. Boerboel tails serve vital functions, aiding balance, movement, and communication. Sadly, myths perpetuate this harmful practice.
However, there’s hope! The NSPCA’s ongoing intervention, including monitoring events like the SABBS Show, is yielding results. The presence of breeders showcasing puppies with proud, natural tails is a testament to this progress.
While the fight against tail maiming continues, the NSPCA’s Special Projects Unit remains steadfast. Its unwavering commitment aims to achieve a South Africa free from this cruel practice.
