Welcome to Our Latest Week in Review!

This week, Bobby stole hearts across social media with a sneak peek into her life at the Boksburg SPCA, where she is ready for adoption and a new family.

We’re continuing our collaboration with Panthera Africa to raise awareness through their new campaign: Tiger Truths – Exposing the Tiger Bone Trade, the objective of which is to shine a powerful spotlight on the cruelty and exploitation of tigers in the tiger bone trade, both globally and within South Africa.

Inspector Matt and DJ completed another vital 10-day outreach in KwaZulu-Natal, assisting animals in some of South Africa’s most remote communities. Our “Fund an Inspector’s Trip” campaign urges our supporters to consider donating to these critical outreaches.

We also encouraged our followers to download our 2024 Annual Report, where we showcased the work we do in communities in need.

Have a look at what we’ve been up to this week.

Tiger Truths: Shining a Spotlight on Tiger Cruelty

When one thinks of tigers, one imagines these majestic predators prowling the wilds of Asia. It is hard to believe, then, that there are more captive tigers in South Africa than there are living in the wild.

In fact, it is estimated that there are up to 10,000 tigers kept captive in South Africa, and only a little over 5,500 living freely. South Africa has the unfortunate title of being the largest exporter of big cats and their bones, mainly to fuel the global demand for big cat body parts.

This week, we partnered up once again with Panthera Africa to share a hard-hitting awareness campaign that exposes the truth behind the tiger bone trade. From an in-depth interview with Dr Ross Harvey to the scary stats behind the trade, this campaign shines a powerful spotlight on the exploitation of tigers.

“Every tiger deserves a life of dignity, not a death for profit.”

“Fund an Inspector’s Trip”: a New BackaBuddy Appeal

Each one of our Inspectors spends two weeks every month travelling throughout the country, inspecting facilities that house and use animals, and helping out in isolated communities that don’t have access to an SPCA.

While this work is critical to ensure the welfare of all animals across the region, these trips are costly. To fund a 10-day trip like this, we need to raise R17,915 to cover meals, fuel, and accommodation. Every month.

This week, we launched our new BackaBuddy campaign to assist in ensuring these vital outreaches continue and had a look at the recent trip taken by Inspectors Matt and DJ to KwaZulu-Natal.

If you’d like to support our BackaBuddy campaign and make a difference to South Africa’s animals, follow this  link, or use this link to complete an EFT.

We thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for standing with us and for standing up for those who can’t speak for themselves.

Outreach That Makes a Difference

In 2024, the NSPCA’s outreach team visited the Eastern Cape to conduct a vital sterilisation campaign in partnership with local veterinary clinics. Not only did our Inspectors assist with animals who needed it the most, but they also used this valuable opportunity to instill compassion and responsibility toward animals in the youngsters of the communities they visited.

This type of outreach is essential, not only for providing much-needed support but also for driving meaningful, lasting change within these communities.

To learn more about this important work and other milestones, read the NSPCA’s 2024 Annual Report.
