In January 2025, the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) uncovered a sad case of dogfighting in Johannesburg South. A severely injured pitbull-type dog was abandoned on the roadside, left to die after enduring unimaginable suffering. Despite immediate intervention by the NSPCA’s Special Projects Unit (SPU), his injuries were too severe, and the most humane course of action was to end his suffering.
The individuals responsible for this act of cruelty have not yet been identified, but the NSPCA remains resolute in its pursuit of justice.
Ongoing Investigation
Our Special Projects Unit continues to actively investigate this case. Recently, inspectors were deployed to the area where the incident occurred, engaging with the local community in an effort to gather critical information. Posters have been placed in key locations, with conversations with pedestrians, shop owners, and residents.
The NSPCA urges anyone with knowledge of this incident to come forward. Even the smallest piece of information could lead to the identification and prosecution of those involved.
Reward for Information
A reward of R5,000 is being offered for information that leads to the identification of the individuals responsible for this dog’s suffering. Dogfighting is a criminal offense under the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962, and the NSPCA is committed to ensuring that offenders face the full extent of the law.
