The NSPCA has formally drawn Laerskool A.G. Visser’s attention to the national Department of Agriculture’s directive regarding the school’s planned camel races at this weekend’s “Kameelfees.”

The festival, set for 26 and 27 September, was promoted as featuring five camel races alongside well-known South African performers. From the outset, the NSPCA raised serious animal welfare concerns. Camels are sentient beings at risk of stress, injury and falls – risks made worse when untrained amateur riders are involved.

After the school challenged our social media posts by presenting a Performing Animals Protection Act (PAPA) licence, we followed up with the Department of Agriculture. The Department confirmed that the licence covers only riding, exhibition and training, not racing, and that the legal requirements for using a temporary facility were not met.

The Department has now advised the camel owner and operator that the event should not proceed due to their non-compliance.

We have written to the school to highlight this communication and to make it clear that, based on the Department’s findings, the camel races or any activities involving these camels should not take place.

The Department’s guidance also sets strict conditions for any camel-related activities: trained handlers only, a suitable track surface and width, veterinary oversight, strict rider-weight limits, and an absolute prohibition on whipping or other harmful practices.

We thank the public for their support as we continue to monitor this situation closely. The NSPCA remains steadfast that animals are living beings, not commodities, and that schools should model compassion and respect for life rather than spectacle.

We thank the Department of Agriculture (Directorate: Veterinary Public Health) for their swift and diligent attention and assistance in this matter.

If you are as passionate about animals and their well-being as we are, consider supporting our causes by donating.
